N8NKC - Not a happy camper

Post by ww8q »

Marty (N8NKC) had a beam and bauln posted in the classified ads for $150. In his ad he stated the antenna was an old Hy-Gain TH-3JRS. He further stated it was missing some hardware “but can easily be obtained at any hardware store”. There was no documentation for the antenna.

I drove the 70 miles and purchased what I thought to be a Hy-Gain antenna and Hy-Gain bauln (for $140). The antenna did appear to be in good shape.

To make a long story short, after doing a lot of searching on the Internet, I found that the antenna was not a Hy-Gain TH-3JRS, but a Mosley TA-33JR. The antenna was also missing more than some parts, to the tune of $101.52 worth.

I tried to contact him via email, but he does not answer his email. I also tried to call him, but the number I wrote down for him is incorrect (that’s my fault).

I guess I should have known the difference between a Hy-Gain and Mosley beam. But what really upsets me is the fact that I was mislead about the “missing hardware”. Was he aware of the fact and just wanted to dump the antenna? I have no way of knowing…

To say the least, I am not a happy camper right now.
