In 2002 my grandfather passed. He boarded a B-52 and flew straight to heaven to be with his predeceased son. Before we could even bury him, there was a knock on the door for the millionth time, I opened it. There stood a man who called himself Randy Chavis. He said he was riding by and saw the tower, so he thought he would chat with the HAM operator inside. I broke the news that he was dead. What a coincidence and a shame that I did not recognize this deceit then, but my lovely grandfather who raised me was dead. I took Randy Chavis' #, it was a standard action at this time. Next thing I know, he is in my grandfathers radio room cleaning it out and retaining the items therein for the sum of $350.00. My grandmother, bless her heart thought she was doing good. She got swindled. Mr. Chavis got everything, a life time of a WW ll fighter pilots stuff. I later found out his radio was worth 1,500.00 alone. Needless to say when Mr. Chavis came back for the 75ft tower I made it clear that he got all he was getting. He left, and I can't get this out of my head, he is a thief, and a liar that stalks the obituaries so he can take what he wants. A quick search of his call sign and name shows the depth of his business and what he is about...greed. He has caused me what will be a life time of pain. I can't believe he took a life time of what it took my grandfather to build. I know my grandmother is at fault, but she didn't know any better, and he did, this is how he makes his living. She was grieving and he was the vulture circling over head when I was not there to watch her. I thought maybe if there were some moral people out there doing business with him they might just stop, and hurt him in his greedy fat pockets. I bet he doesn't even remember me, because he probably has done this many times before. Don't do business with black hearted people!

It has taken me a while to figure out who this is so here is the story:
I was out riding around one day and saw a tower and it had a old th3 on it. I stopped to see who it was and a girl came to the door and told me it was her gradfathers. She then told me he had passed away and the stuff had been there for a number of years. This was in the late 2000 it has been along time. I gave here my name and told here that if her grandmother want to sell any of her late husbands stuff to call me. well, a couple of weeks went by and I recieved from the gradmother to come over and talk to her. I did just that and she showed me what was there. This stuff had not been tuned on since the late '80's:
Kenwood TS 520..about a 4/10
lots of old conecters and cables
a R390 without knobs and parts missing inside.
the tower and rotor which was rusted at the top..bdx 48'
none of this was or could be check out because of the weather eating away at the cables which would fall apart in your hands.
I talked to the widow and she told me what she wanted for it and we made a deal and that was that. I went back to get the tower and a few olther things and was told that I could not have it by the granddaughter . I was told this by the granddaughter and I explained that I needed to talk to her grandmother and she told me I could not and to go away. I did just that and have never heard anything from this person till I started receiving strange emails and could not tell who it was a couple of weeks ago.
I have tried to talk to this person by email and tell her that she had nothing to do with what went on and she continues to send emails me and has posted this on the board. I have asked to talk to the grandmother in my emails and have heard nothing. I have no idea if she is still alive .
I have never taken advanage of anyone and have been honest with all my dealings with people. If anyone thinks I did anything wrong after they read this then I don't know what to tell you. If you need to talk to me my number is easy to find .
Well, I just wanted to reply to this . sorry for all the band width.

I have had one dealing with Randy, and the transaction went as smooth as any deal could. He paid me exactly what I was asking for the item, no questions asked. . We had numerious emails throughout the entire transaction, all were very pleasant, and he was quick to respond to all of them. I would not hesitate at all to deal with him again.

I have purchased items from Randy, including a tower. Everything was as represented, A-OK. He is fair and reasonable and I won't hesitate to do business with him again.

Hello all, I have known Randy for several years now, and yes I first new him as a customer. I bought several items from him shortly after upgrading to General.
Randy always was courteous and very much a Gentleman whether we were conducting business or not. I cannot imagine him taking advantage of a fellow hams family. Apparently there was a great misunderstanding by someone involved in this deal, or perhaps it was someone totally outside of the deal who made comments about "what things are worth" after the fact. WHO KNOWS?
Anyway, I will go on record by saying that Randy WB4UNA is a GOOD GUY and can be trusted! Thanks for the space and 73...KD4UXM Buddy.

I have known Randy, WB4UNA for several years now and just don't understand this. I will also go on record saying he is a stand up honest guy and I don't think he would do the things this person is accusing him of.. I have done business with him and know of others that have also and all have had good things to say about him. I have also heard Randy speak of deals buying and selling equipmet and they all sounded fair to me. $1500.00 for a TS-520?? come on, it wouldn't be worth that if it were new in the box!

Over the past five years, I've administered the estates of both my father and mother. The painful fact is that regardless of how treasured a possession & the associated memories might be, the monetary value of ANYTHING is never more than the price someone else is willing to pay for it.

I sold two decent-looking TS-520s from Dad's estate for $100 each and was glad to do so: the buyer took them "as-is". I had neither the time nor the inclination to check them out & make repairs- even at top $$$, those radios no longer sell for enough to have made the effort worthwhile (for me). The other fellow wasn't looking to make money, he just sought the pleasure of renovating a couple of old radios.

If I were to hear that an unknowing widow sold her deceased husband's new Orion II transceiver, new Titan III amp, new 4 element Steppir yagi, and new 65' motorized crank-up tower to some fast-talking scoundrel for a few hundred bucks, I'd be outraged. But 30 years down the road, when that same equipment is old, in poor or unknown condition, possibly without replacement parts or factory support available should they be needed . . . well, a few hundred bucks for a quick sale might be acceptable, just to get it out of the way.

"Trackingaliar," I'm sorry to hear that your grandfather joined the ranks of the silent keys. I'm sure that he is greatly missed by your family and by his friends in the amateur radio community.

P.S. When my own time comes (as it someday will) my wife knows who to call to assure that my station is quickly sold at a fair price. She won't be tortured with the hassle of handling it alone & uncertain . . . that's just a little "peace-of-mind" insurance that I'll recommend to anyone.
