I need Help with R5 Cushcraft Vertical

Post by NZ4Q »

Hello I need some help on an R-5 Cushcraft Vertical Antenna. First of all I have not used it in several years, so I reassembled it and checked the SWR and it is out of site on all bands but 10 meters. If 10 meters is OK does that mean the matching network is OK? Maybe I have a trap bad? 12 meters will not match, 15 meters 1.7 @21.300.00, 17 meters @ 18.110.00 is 2.5, and 20 meters is matched @ 14.862.00 well beyond the band. Any information would be helpful.

Thank You!

Ken

Before doing anything else... Here is step 1

Step 1:

The first thing to check is the coax from your transmitter to the antenna. Do this by disconnecting the antenna at that end of the coax and connecting a 50 ohm dummy load on the the antenna end of the coax. Load up you transmitter as if you were using the antenna and check to be sure the SWR is acceptable.

If not, the problem is in the coax cable. Replace it and test the new cable in the same manner.

If SWR and power output is OK with the dummy load in place you have confirmed the functionality of the coax. You have also confirmed that your transmitter is working as it should.

Step 2: Verify each and every dimension of the antenna and validate that it has been reassembles exactly as it should be assembled. Then verify that each and every joint is properly connected do this with a ohm meter or other suitable positive test of continuity. If you have verified dimensions and connectivity, then all that remains is the antenna traps themselves. Using a grid dip meter, verify each trap. Prior to doing this, check with the manufacturer to determine the proper testing technique to use.

Good luck...
