TS-820S

Post by kd5srw »

I happen to have aquired a very nice, very clean TS-820S, everything checks out and the rig puts out the full 100W that is called for. Bench test came back all thumbs up. That said, my question revolves around the matter of the case having been repainted, now granted it was professionally done (ie: not a krylon job in the basement,,,) and it is a Kenwood light gray. Overall it looks very good, my question does a repaint lower the value to a potential buyer or perhaps even a collector. Just how much does outward appearence vs inward performance effect value? Refinishing usually changes the value...

Post by K4ICL »

It usually depends on what is being refinished.

A collector wanting his collection to be representative of original gear will shy away from refinished or refurbished equipment where someone just wanting a working piece in nice condition would appreciate the extra work going into the project. Refinishing a rare, hard to get piece, definitely lowers its value. Refinishing a readily available piece will have less effect on value.

Changing the color or finish will make the piece less desirable and lowers the value for most potential buyers. He worries about selling it later, i.e. your same concern.

The average value of a TS-820S is about $375 in average working condition. Sometimes refinishing the case brings the value up a little, but not much. After all, there are thousands of TS-820's sitting idle and, potentially, available.

Cheers,
