KE5GNZ- SELLS DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Post by KM4VX »

I bought an Elecraft XV50 from KE5GNZ advertised on QTH.COM. It was defective, DOA. . I had a professional rebuild it at considerable expense. KE5GNZ agreed to help with the additional cost. He jerked me around for a few weeks and then never sent the check ($37.50 which was actually about 1/4 of my additional cost). He also failed to answer e-mails. In my personal opinion it would be a mistake to do business with KE5GNZ. I will never do business with him again. In my personal opinion KE5GNZ does not meet his financial obligations, does not complete a sale and cannot be trusted to do what he says he will do. Thank you.

Dear Ron,
Your XV50 has been repaired. The problem was that the TXin and RXout labels on the rear panel were swapped. This was corrected by the addition of labels over the silkscreen.

The DE-9 cable had one wire that had broken because the clamps were not holding the cable in place. The clamps were repositioned and the broken wire re-soldered.

The alignments listed in the XV Owner's Manual were completed. The power indication was adjusted to just light the 20 watt indicator when the 20 watt level is reached. The input power level used was 1 mW from my HP8640B signal generator which is quite accurate for output level. You may have to make minor adjustments to the Input attenuator.

The local oscillator was adjusted to 22.000000 MHz using my calibrated HP frequency counter.

The time for this work is 1 hour, and the labor fee is $50. Return shipping will be $12.85.
Total $62.85.

I warrant my workmanship for 90 days (exclusive of shipping charges). If you have problems with this XV50, please contact me using [email protected].

Hello Ron

i am not sure i know it was working with my set up here. if you want get a hold of Elecraft and see what they say, or send to them and i will help on the shipping and have them check it out on a k2. i am not real sure as to why it is not working as it should with your set up.
Caroll: The transverter TX and RX ports are reversed in the transverter, which is why it does not work. An experienced Elecradft engineer has just got back to me with this finding. Did you build this transverter? I am obtaining a written damage report. Thanks Ron

No I purchased from a local Ham who installed for me when purchased and never touched untilled removed and sent to you that is weird but I never looked at it as it worked. Let me know thank you

Carol: Did you use a single IF connection to the transverter? I imagine you did, since the TX/RX ports do not work but the transverter worked for you. Did he build the transverter? He made a serious mistake, which you would not have noticed since you did not use the TX/RX ports which one does with an Elecraft radio. Ron

Yes, use single coax connection. I would assume that the one I purchased from built as he appeared to be the kit type with the canned hams and other kit trancivers. Nothing burned up is there
Caroll: Thank you for the quick responses. With the TX and RX ports reversed there could be damage to the transverter as well as the radio etc. I hope not. I will let you know when I get the information. Meanwhile, you may want to bring this to the attention of the builder (all Elecraft transverters are sold only as kits). 73. Ron

BOTTOM LINE: Here are two e-mails from KE5GNZ which explain more clearly his position. They are almost unintelligible, but you get the drift. I have not deleted his profanity or edited his paranoia. He said he mailed a check, but never did. I never received a check, which he writes that he mailed. He said he didn’t build the XV50, but that was incorrect. The unit was wired wrong, and I spent about $150.00 trying to correct the error including sending it to a professional to repair. He said he was away risking his life working on war planes, but that was untrue. Fantasy. I know a little bit about operating in dangerous areas and force protection; KE5GNZ is incapable of telling the truth. He simply makes up one story after another, all proving to be false. He sells defective equipment, and then claims he is being harassed. Here are two KE5GNZ e-mails. They are almost incomprehensible:

“Ron i also failed to inform you that the moneyorder went out thursday MEDIAL MAIL.”

You agreed to reimburse me a fraction of my additional expenses ($37.50 check due from you) but I have not received the check and no update from you as requested twice. I conclude you have no intention of completing the transaction. I have served abroad many times from Geneva and Paris to the jungles of Latin America. I have never failed to make proper arrangements to fulfill my financial obligations to others. I am not interested in hearing further why you may not be able to send me a check. You can keep the check; shove it. The ham community will make its own assessment of your reliability as a seller. I have made mine. Ron-
