Kenwood TS930 vfo tuning problem

Post by zut444 »

When my TS930 is cold I have no trouble changing frequencies in whichever band I have selected, but when the set gets even a little bit warm, the knob "loses its traction". I would appreciate any tips regarding this issue. Thank you in advance. de N1MFW

TS930 VFO Tuning Problem

Post by WA9WVX »

Hello Bob,

The Kenwood TS930 doesn't have a true VFO, it incorporates a Optic Isolated Chopper Disk that provides the Digital pulses to an Up / Down counter circuit. There are a couple of items to exaimin internally on the transceiver. If for some reason the Chopper Disk has loosened up under warmth, there could be a loose set screw or shaft. The second item that could cause this type of failure would be Cold Solder connections on the printed circuit board with the Optical Coupler.

Kenwood transceivers of this age 10 years old or older develop many "intermittent" Cold Solder connections. This can take a lot of time to locate the intermittent connections. Using a Good Small Pencil Tip Temperature Controlled Soldering Iron with a steady hand, a large magnifying glass, good lighting, solder, you can reflow the PC Board Solder connections to eliminate the intermittent problem.
