What would be causes for 897d to not power up reverse polority diode or what is most serious vpossibility am looking at used radio with this problem appreciate any sugestions.

Take you volt meter and start at the powerr supply and record the voltages. follow thru as far as the power switch.
If you still have 12.4 or more voltls to the power switch, then try a full reset whicdh usually uses the power on switch and one other.
come back with more data that you have discovered.
