Problem with Icom 746 and Icom SM-5 microphone

Anyone know if the Icom SM-5 mic is compatible with the Icom 746?
I picked up an Icom SM-5 desk mike for my IC-746 {non-pro} and apparently they don't work well together. I get plenty of audio {too much unless I crank it way down} but for some reason it effects the PL tones when operating 2 meter FM. After plugging the SM-5 mic into the transceiver for several minutes, the PL tones cease to work. If I unplug the mic and re-plug it, the tones will work again for awhile. Odd! Anyone ever experience this? Everything works fine when I use the Icom factory hand mic.
