Portable or mobile?

Just what it says -- this is the place for any discussions not related to Buying, Selling and Trading ham gear. The discussion must be related to Ham Radio.

Portable or mobile?

Post by wb3cez »

Is it correct to call the operation of an HT as portable or even refer to an HT as a "portable"? I may be mistaken, but I always thought "portable" meant operating from a fixed location other then that listed on the station license. Ofcourse if you are operating an HT while at a fixed location, you would be portable. But what would you call it if you are using the HT while walking around at a hamfest? Are you then mobile? [/b]

There is no incorrect way to do it.
Now it is logical to use mobile when you are actually moving....
or if using an HF rig in a vehicle with the obvious moblile antenna system.
This would pass on to whom ever is listening, that your signal will likely vary.

you may want to use portable when using an HT, and you are not at home or in your vehicle. Again this explaines varying signal strength..

It is no longer required to indicate you are at a location other than you license address..
it is just a freindly way to notify all and sundry that your signal may vary, or you are not at home near your telephone..
You do not have to use either,,,,, but its nice if you do.
