Just what it says -- this is the place for any discussions not related to Buying, Selling and Trading ham gear. The discussion must be related to Ham Radio.

Chinese gear

Post by W4KVW »

Everything I own as far as transceivers go are all ICOM(JAPAN)with the exception of (1) BAOFENG UV-5R which I like VERY much.It was FREE so I did NOT purchase it but I did sell my ICOM T8A after I received the BAOFENG because I no longer used or needed it.Only so much CASH in my Ham Radio budget so I buy whatever I can afford at the time & I USUALLY prefer all ICOM gear. :D

You might want to check the "Made In" label on those Icom radios. Modern ones, that I used to own, had the Made In China label on them. Anything from about 10 or more years ago, is likely to be Japanese manufactured, but typically most of the modern radios, from "The Big Three", are at least, in part, made in the People's Republic of China. Especially the microphones.

Did any of you bother to pop the back cover and see where all the chips are made? Even the US manufacturers use chips made in Asian countries. Including China! There just is not much left of the chip manufacturing capacity the US had 25 years ago. Most of the components are outsourced and some are labeled with domestic names, but come from the same Asian factory that makes the Asian components. So it is a mute point what you buy, most if not all components come from Asia.

Actually, YES.

My issue isn't with Asian, or Import radios. My issue is with the currency manipulation perpetrated upon us, by the Communist Chinese government. It is why I no longer own any modern Asian made radios. If they were still made in Japan, I would have no issue. I have moved past WWII, and Japan has become a good ally, in the world. I now only own Collins, Drake, Hammarlund and Johnson HF radios, and Motorola, or OLD Kenwood VHF and UHF radios.
I understand that there are some things, hell MOST things, that we wish to buy, that you simply cannot find, made anywhere other than Communist China. We have no options, in some areas. But, when I have a choice, I choose to buy from American, North American, and American allies, before I will buy from the Chinese. But, yes, I understand, though I may not like it much, that there is a high level of unavoidable Chinese products. I simply vote with my wallet, when I can.[/u]

Well ain't this a understatement. Everything I buy at Wal-Mart comes from China. The only Ham Radio Manufactures in The US is Ten-Tec and Elecraft. Martin F Jew sells stuff that comes from Asia Too. I guess that we need to work at getting some new Ham Manufacture building HF rigs. We did for a short time Patcom. They didn't last because there HF rig Sold for over $1500. Too bad they didn't last. MFJ makes radios sort of, would I buy one, no. We have the Big Three Kenwood, Yeasu and Icom. Sorry to tell you those are Manufactured in China TOO. 73 from RB
