James Northluck [james.northluck11@gmail.com] SCAMMER CREEP

Post by wn6tys »

<b>
I really got taken by James Northluck [james.northluck11@gmail.com]

I didn't check on this guy, I just thought that most Hams were inherently Honest!

In short - I was scammed out of $152 (USD) by this guy.

A few days after I sent a Western Union money-gram and this somewhat illiterate scammer sent me another request for $55 for Customs!

This is when I realized I had been taken by this individual who had the gall to call me on the phone and admit that he was a con artist BUT HE STILL INSISTED THAT THIS WAS NOT ONE OF HIS CONS - This one was legit. He mentioned this website, being wanted by the police, etc, etc.

In any event, he called again, demanding the money for Customs! At this juncture he was getting kind of verbally abusive. I related to him that I would send money and alluded that he was not a model citizen!

Below are a few e-mails that Northluck Sent me - If you see this pattern - Avoid it! Apparently a few of his relatives are in the same scamming business with him.

Hi Rob.

Thanks for getting in touch. I have for sale an Icom IC-HM7 Hand-Mic and Icom IC-SM5 Desk-Mic. They are still in the box and in mint condition. I am asking $130 for both mics and my price includes shipping. I do not have images of them but condition is perfect. I have made shipping inquiries and can ship via UPS or FedEx whichever you prefer. What's your shipping address?

Regards.
James.

Hello Rob,

Sorry for the late response. I completed shipping yesterday but was held up in a meeting. The lady at the customer care desk says all you need do is follow tracking details till you receive the mics and you would need a valid id to confirm and receive them.

These are the Tracking Details:

CLICK ON: FIRST FLIGHT EXPRESS DELIVERY
TRACKING #: ABNV89502
PARCEL BEAER: Rob Walker

Kindly let me know once you receive the mics.

Regards,
James.

Hi Rob,

I just received an email from the shipping company saying there is being little problem with Customs officer in charge of supervising the delivery of the unit to you.

I tried getting in touch with the Customs officer and he says you would need to get an insurance and customs clearance to get the shipment released and delivered to you.

The cost for this Clearance and insurance is $55USD and you would need send the payment to the Custom officer in charge of supervising the delivery of the Unit.

According to the lady who i spoke to on the phone, she says the Custom officer who is in charge of supervising the delivery and he is the only one who can authorize and sign the release and delivery of the unit to you.

Let me know upon receipt of this mail.

Regards,
James.

FINAL NOTE: The website www.firstflightupdate.co.cc did display some shipping info but when I later looked at the site and checked the WHOIS DOMAIN REGISTRATION I realized I had really been taken!

My own fault - If anyone could report this to the authorities or equiv. maybe this guy and his "merry-men" could be become aware that his game is over.

Western Union

Post by WA5JAV »

For years I've tried to make sense of buyers remitting funds via Western Union. How many fraud flags need to pop-up to flash Fraud? The last time I noticed the WU window in a local food-chain store, there was a prominent disclaimer warning about wiring cash to strangers. As long as people are clueless, the scammers and spammers will never go away.

Sorry about your luck. Never send money via western union, it is a clear sign that something is amiss. I have never used western union for a stateside transaction. Paypal is preferred but a money order if you can check the ham out. Insist on a callsign and email that ham via his qrz.com email address and make sure it is him/her. There is no reason to do a transaction overseas if you live in the U.S., the cost of shipping is prohibitive.

PETER WESTWOOD 2E1DHL

Post by kc7fys »

I have gotten a surprisingly cheap offer on a radio from a Peter Westwood, who is in the callbook. He uses a gmail address, and wants to be paid via meetsee@gmx.net on Paypal. His English, however, is exactly characteristic of many scams I have seen.
Wondering if this guy's legit or not.

I can't imagine buying a used radio from overseas just to save a few bucks.
Foreign scammers count on American fools. There must be a lot of them
because the foreign scammer business is booming. Come on guys!
Didn't I just post something previous about risk? Well, triple the risk and
buy a used radio from a foreign country. It's your money.
(PS If they can't sell it there, where there is not the amount of used radio
gear there is here... and the price is low... think for just a moment first.)

Scolding from KS4ED RE: "Foreigners"

Post by kc7fys »

I've bought and sold ham equipment with non-American hams on numerous occasions. Ironically, I've only been cheated by a fellow American ham (with a legitimate callsign and address).
Anyway, my question was about a specific operator. Yes, it is my money--and thanks for your advice, although your remark "there's not the amount of used radio gear" makes me wonder if you've spent much time abroad. There's as much or more used radio gear in Japan, Germany, England, Sweden, Korea--and honest hams among us there.
Judging a fair deal involves taking a look at the correspondence for signs of legitimacy in language--is the person a native speaker, and if not, does that seller display characteristics of Nigerian ripoff artists as seen in spam emails? Is a normal non-free email address and phone number proffered? Is the interaction different or weird in any way? That's the first sign to back off and leave it alone.
There are ways to establish that another ham is legit or not--beyond just saying, "If he's 'foreign,' he's gotta be lying."
Again, my question was about a specific member of the QTH.com community who doesn't happen to live in with us here in the US.
Best regards,

I've written about risk. I never wrote it would be a guaranteed rip off.
Yes, I've been to Europe but it was long ago. I have friends in England,
Germany and Austrailia. I'm glad that you have found so many
honest Hams in other countries that have sold you equipment.
Hope your luck holds up. Just my thoughts... if you can't find a piece
of used radio gear here in the United States the piece you must be
looking for must be rare. In the buy/sell world "rare" can be even
more risk. If the price is low... even more risk.

Anywhoooo.... the past two weeks my wife has been recovering
from surgery and I've been home to care for her. In moments of
twiddling my thumbs boredom I have contributed some comments
here. So, I'll turn it back over to the usuals who devote their lives
to this forum.
Like we used to say in Viet Nam... "Back in the real world..." and
that's where I'll be tomorrow. Hope I didn't piss too many of ya off.

I have received several scam emails from the UK, I often list for items wanted, strangely these scammers preferred PayPal payment, one even showed an item as having been shipped until I called the shipping company hihi.

I immediatly reported every scam to Scott and he passed the info on to all members I believe.

I originate from England and can say that 99% are good honest people but there will always be that 1% that spoils it for the rest.

The saying goes, if the deal is too good to believe then it usually is, like the FL-7000 shipped for under $500,, wow,, the offers to me were a TS-2000 for $750 delivered etc.

Get phone numbers it does not cost much to call overseas, do a cross check phone # versus QTH address,, use your head... or avoid the sale if something does not feel right.

There that’s my 2 cents worth..
