K8TJ - be cautious

Post by N2CTI »

 I purchased an Icom IC-910H for $950 on eBay from him as CW-MAN.

Item arrived in good time, good packing. But the radio had no transmit output on the UHF band. I went to the trouble of buying a dummy load and new N-adapter and confirmed no output. Opened the rig and found a loose solder joint at the N-connector and a jumper joining it to the board. Resoldered and got power out. It just irritates me that the ham operator selling this either did not bother to check it out or knew it was bad and didn't tell me.
There's always the chance that shipping caused it, but it was double-boxed in the original box and packing.

IC-910H on eBay

Post by k8tj »

In my own defense SIR, you NEVER contacted me about the radio not having any output on 440, you simply left a negative feedback for me on eBay but you conveniently waited until AFTER I posted a POSITIVE feedback for you. The 910 was working PERFECTLY when it left here. It was on 440 every day I that owned it and it worked 100%. Before jumping to an instant conclusion next time about an eBay seller, try contacting them to work things out first. I have 8000+ feedbacks and have been selling on eBay for over 11 years and I have an excellent worldwide reputation and that alone should have been enough for YOU to realize that I am a reputable seller. I would have happily given you a full refund had you requested it or would have worked with you on getting the problem repaired. All you have succeeded in doing is getting yourself added to a blocked bidder list and making yourself look like an impatient hothead.

Haven't even read the feedback you gave me. Being tuned to 440 all the time doesn't really constitute a test. Actually this problem could have been missed if you were just looking at the radio's readout screen, the power indicator went up and down with the turning of the power knob, just nothing actually going out the cable. Only if you used an external meter would you see it wasn't transmitting anything. I kind of assumed you would have done this being the long-time dealer you are. It took me a week to order and receive the proper dummy load to test it with and a couple more days to open the rig and check things. I have a job that doesn't let me play ham radio every day. I didn't notify you because 1) I wanted to be sure there was a problem and 2) If you knew there was a problem before sending the radio why should I think you would do something about it? or 3) If you didn't know the problem was there - you should have.

N2CTI,

I fail to see where K8TJ acted irresponsibly. You never contacted him to allow him an opportunity to resolve the situation. Also, it sounds like it was a simple fix. Count your blessings, many posts on this forum are related to HAMs being deliberately conned out of $1000s.

I can understand your frustration, but posting negative feedback such as you have is an unnecessary demonization of K8TJ. This feedback will probably be read by most of his future buyers and may be a real detriment to his reputation, especially with ebay. Maybe you can consider a mutual feedback withdraw after your emotions cool: http://pages.ebay.com/help/feedback/que ... rawal.html demonize

Best,

I still believe the radio should have been checked out before selling it. But because of the remote possibility of shipping damage, I have withdrawn the negative feedback from eBay. I don't mind being on his no-bid list.

IC-910H

I just told you in my previous reply the radio was on 440 every day. That means it was IN USE daily. I would have never sold the radio as working 100% had I known of a problem. Look at my current and past eBay listings and you will find many pieces of equipment listed WITH problems and sold as such. Again... YOU as the buyer, should have contacted me FIRST about the problem. If you had bought something from AES or Universal Radio and found it had a problem, what would you have done ? That's right, you would have contacted who you got it from and you should have should have done the same thing here with the 910H you got from me. That antenna connector issue could have easily been caused due to rough handling in shipping. It was most likely a cold or light solder connection in the first place. Don't assume that every seller on eBay is out to rip you off because were not. eBay is actually probably one of the safest places to buy and sell especially if you use Paypal because they offer both buyer and seller protection. This is what I do for a living and the last thing I want to do is piss off a buyer. I always go the extra mile to help my buyers out if I can because I want their business again down the road. And just for the record I have over 2,500 repeat customers from all 50 states and over 120 countries.

I have bought a couple of item's from CW- Man and service was outstanding. My last buy from him i discovered i had bought the item before and contacted him and he not only exchanged it for another item but offered me a refund of which i did not request. To me the obvious is that N2cti make's rash decision's and i would think if he was what to me is a distrusting person of people who sell on E Bay he should maybe look else where....
