Please be sure when you are sending your gear

I just completed a terrible deal with a fellow ham. Yes he refunded my money. I emailed the proper questions, decided to purchase, sent the funds and received a tracking number. My correct address is on the paypal site, also on qrz. I also gave it directly to him via phone. I waited all day for the rig to arrive per the tracking information. To my surprise the tracking info said it was delivered "on the front porch" Not on my porch. I called him and he gave me the address the rig was sent to and it was completely different than mine but close to my qth and about a mile away. I knew where the address was and went and rang the doorbell. They said they had been there all day nothing had been delivered. The $900.00 rig is in the wind. I always use delivery signature required and he did not pay for that service. He did the right thing and refunded completely. I will not name him, this post is not meant to embarrass anyone, it is to help these deals to go smoothly. He wanted to send UPS only and I agreed. UPS droping it off at a diferent address than the wrong one he provided. I don't know.
Good trading, selling and buying,

If UPS told him where the package was delivered, then chances are good he mislabeled the address. Drivers do make mistakes, but they handle hundreds of packages a day over a wide area and will usually insist they delivered to the right address if asked especially when there's no signature for proof. I'm guessing UPS customer service simply read off the address he gave them. The party at the other address probably does have the radio even though they told you otherwise. It's theirs now and they can legally keep it.

Did you specifically ask for delivery signature required? I wouldn't presume someone would do this on their own accord. It's best to request it upfront.

Good to hear the seller for the most part admitted fault and issued you a full refund.

Sure I ask for delivery conformation, he chose not to comply. It is the shippers responsibility to get the gear to my location delivered to me in good condition. I do not wish to debate with anyone further on this. My original post was to help others. If you can use the information great, if not great also.

Yessss!! delivery confromation is a must! I have to use Usps for all my shipping, because their is no UPS or FED-EX here. But i want to give the buyer a chance to check the status of their purchase. So i do the delivery confromation and most of the time you can track it if shipped priority mail.

I had the exact same thing happen a few years ago. I purchased a radio from a guy and gave him my address both over the phone and included with the MO I sent him. He then sent the radio to my old call book address from 20 years ago!
Luckily I drove over to my old house and found it sitting on their front porch.

Actually Delivery Confirmation is just about useless. I had the post office say they delivered a box that was 24" x 24" x 14" and weighed 58#. It was never delivered here and even though it had a delivery confirmation. I filed a claim with PayPal and yhey told me that they had proof that it was delivered. I asked them to please show me the proof and they cited the delivery confirmation that stated that it was delivered to my zip code. I told them that I live in a pretty large zip code. I got my money back but had to sign an affidavit that I never received the box. The weirdest part is that I would have thought that the mail person would have surely known what happened to a parcel of that size and weight, but she didn't.

The best way to get proof is with a "Direct Signature Confirmation". Ebay (and I think PayaPal) requires this for any shipment that is worth $250 or more. FEDEX requires it for anything with declared value over $500 and there is no extra charge for it. It is figured into the rate.

Actually, the US Postal Service's Delivery Confirmation and Tracking system is just about useless. It might tell you if a package has left from origin (IF the originating station remembers to scan said package), as well as it might tell you IF the package has been received at the destination station & is out for delivery.

UPS & FEDEX tracking systems are miles ahead than USPS.

I agree with the signature conformation. I think thats what i will start doing on my shipping. I have a package right now "says it was received at the San Antonio post office 23rd and scheduled for delivery 30th" So i have to agree with signature conformation. Maybe i'll get my package monday!

UPS did mix up a delivery of mine with a neighbor a couple doors down and across the street. I got a box of mardi gras beads addressed to the neighbor so on a hunch I delivered it the next morning and retrieved my .22LR Ruger Charger target barrel which was setting on their dining table yet to be opened.
Just to say, they can and do drop off at the wrong address sometimes. I suspect they can't or don't want to read labels on boxes. My ice machine came in with the box labeled on all four sides with "this end up".....facing the ground. FedEx about the same. My FT5000MP was sitting on it's side while the box was plainly marked with this side up. Seems as shipping rates go up the quality of service goes down.

Don't use UPS!

If you want it to get there with the least hassle, use FedEx!

Similar Experience.

Ten years ago I had a very similar experience with UPS. I purchased an item no longer in production from a fellow ham and it was delivered to a house about a mile away. The seller had the correct address however just dropped it off at the wrong house. I am not sure how they later determined what address that it was dropped off at. I discovered the error several days later and when I went to the house to retrieve my shipment the homeowner claimed that they brought the package to their work to give it to the UPS driver. UPS customer service told the seller that the driver talked with me and that I retrieved the package which was totally false. The driver never talked with me and I certainly did not obtain the shipment Unfortunately this package was never located and I never found a replacement. The seller did not insure the shipment however he did promptly refund my purchase price.

I know a ham that lived near your old QTH. He ordered a radio that was supposed to be delivered by UPS. He didn't receive it and the shipper filed a claim. They checked the drivers records and it said "in Bushes". Yep, it had been sitting outside in the bushes for about a week.

As a retired small package delivery person Terry N8erm is absolutely correct in advising a signature request. None of the delivery services when delivering to a home are allowed to deliver if a signature was requested and not gotten. I had customers that asked me to sign off there packages when not at home which i often did but they also left a signed note by them griving me permission in case of a problem which never occured plus they had a very secure area to leave the package such as in garages or back rooms.Yes packages are left at wrong addresses but usually the mistake is made at the end of the drivers day and he is very tired. I live at 1307 4th ave and a couple of times packages have been left at 1307 third ave and yes my area of town is normally a later day delivery. Remember all delivery companies are allowed to leave packages that require no signature at residences.

Yes Larrry, They are allowed to deliver them but they are still liable for $100 or the insured value, what ever is higher. Now if you check that little box that essentially says "deliver without a sigmature regardless of value", you are completrly letting the trucking company off the hook for any liability. I don't know why anyone would agree to that, because with a signature or not the trucking company is still responsible for ssfely delivering the package. In some "marginal" neighborhoods in the big ugly city about 30 miles north of here, UPS will not leave a package without a signature or a signature waver. About a year ago I had a $5,000 radio dropped on my doorstep by UPS with no signature required. I couldn't believe my eyes when I came home and saw this big box sitting in front of the door.
I also had a PRO III that didn't need a signature delivered two doors down by UPS. My neighbors were on vacation and brought it over when they got home, but it had been sitting there for a couple of days.
