Re: cheap source for those just getting started?

There are plenty of ways to get on HF for your budget. It may not have all the new bells and whistles, but it will receive and transmit.

Re: Collins 30L-1

There are a lot of those in use today. There are others that are purely collector's items. The collector's versions are highly priced. Yours is not a collector item as it sits. It will need to be tested (dry capacitors, etc) and the case repaired. I would GUESS $1K or slightly less.

Re: Towers and Beams

The best way to maximize value is to work a contingency deal. "If you take it down and remove it, the price is $xxxx. If you take it down and decide you don't want it, I appreciate your help."

Re: What desk mic to get for Icom V-8000

From ICOM, it would be the SM25 (available on aftermarket, now discontinued) or SM26 (current). There are others that will work but most will require modification of the connector.

Great radio that was a few years ahead of its time. To work on it you will need the extender board. Those are available but sometimes tough to find.

Re: 2m amp on dual band rig...

I am GUESSING that you would do more damage to the radio than the amp. It will sense the RF and key but will create a mismatch in the tuning circuit. If the amp is relay keyed instead of RF sensing, you could get by with bypassing it with a hard switch. It is likely to be a problem.

Used tower prices are totally dependent on the buyer. The cost of transportation limits the market to a geographic area near you. Without knowing the tower type, it is impossible to determine wind loading capacity or other design factors. New tower prices are very high and that makes a used tower re...

470pf and should be rated to about 250V. Anything close will work in that application. It is not frequency dependent.

There are 2 main differences:
1. A manual tuner takes longer to tune.
2. A manual tuner costs much less.

Within each type, there are variances such as maximum SWR tuning capacity, power handling, etc. But those are the 2 main differences between the 2 types.

On the ground it is worth a LOT more. There are costs and risks associated with taking the antennas and tower down that are roughly equal to the cost of the hardware. Therefore, a buyer has to be willing to risk about 2X the original price with no real guarantee of success.

Any 12VDC relay with contacts rated for the current required by the radio (almost all of them) should work if you can find a good source for it that is powered only when the car is "ON." Some cigarette lighter/accessory sockets are powered down when the car is "OFF" and should work well to key the r...

In general, the higher it is will mean a lower take-off angle. The lower the angle, the longer the path. Many contesters will have single band 10 and 15 meter antennas mounted lower on the tower fixed for the caribbean and from the northeast US even for EU. Optimal height will depend on what you wan...

"Getting out" is not the issue. Both can and will perform well. The Windom was originally a single wire fed antenna and had a lot of issues with radiation (TVI and RFI) and ground currents at the shack. It has been redesigned and is often seen as an OCF (off center fed) antenna with coax or twin-lea...

15 years or so I got scammed out of $1500. It was (and is) a lot of money to me. The POS was living "in a post office box" at a mail drop (not even the PO) in Glendale AZ.
